OFFICIAL STATEMENT, National Organizers

On January 21, 2017 we will unite in Washington, DC for the Women’s March on Washington. We stand together in solidarity with our partners and children for the protection of our rights, our safety, our health, and our families — recognizing that our vibrant and diverse communities are the strength of our country.

The rhetoric of the past election cycle has insulted, demonized, and threatened many of us–women, immigrants of all statuses, those with diverse religious faiths particularly Muslim, people who identify as LGBTQIA, Native and Indigenous people, Black and Brown people, people with disabilities, the economically impoverished and survivors of sexual assault. We are confronted with the question of how to move forward in the face of national and international concern and fear.

In the spirit of democracy and honoring the champions of human rights, dignity, and justice who have come before us, we join in diversity to show our presence in numbers too great to ignore. The Women’s March on Washington will send a bold message to our new administration on their first day in office, and to the world that women’s rights are human rights. We stand together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.

We support the advocacy and resistance movements that reflect our multiple and intersecting identities. We call on all defenders of human rights to join us. This march is the first step towards unifying our communities, grounded in new relationships, to create change from the grassroots level up. We will not rest until women have parity and equity at all levels of leadership in society. We work peacefully while recognizing there is no true peace without justice and equity for all. HEAR OUR VOICE.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

This is an INCLUSIVE march, and EVERYONE who supports women’s rights are welcome.

PLEASE SHARE, we need to spread the word everywhere! And there are groups forming for EVERY STATE, so search for your local group as well!

We especially need HOSTS and ORGANIZERS from marginalized communities for this to be truly inclusive, please DM your state administrator to get involved!

Ugly in Defeat and Ugly in Victory

this-is-what-yall-wanted-rightWhen I arrived at the office the morning after, one of my co-workers said promptly and cheerfully to me, “I saw you on TV last night.”

I was still relatively new to the office, and not yet at a place where I was privy to inside jokes or enough history to make anything more than polite conversation. So I replied, “Oh yeah?”

“Yeah, down at the protest at Trump Tower,” he laughed. “Did you have fun?”

I had not been at the protest surrounding our very own Trump tower, though I had seen the protesters on many of my social media outlets. I’d spent the entirety of the previous night sifting through the news – articles about the woman vote and Trump’s agenda for his first 100 days and tweets about violence directed at non-cis white individuals. And yes, I’d watched footage from the protests too, and been too tired to filter my mixed emotions.

godbless“I got a lot of good pictures,” I played along.

It wasn’t until later, when he made another joke about emails and meticulous record keeping that I realized – he hadn’t been good-naturedly poking at me for being in utter shock on 11/9. He hadn’t been trying to establish a light-hearted dialogue about freedom of speech and protest and the complete 180 our nation is about to be doing. He was mocking me. Continue reading

inside the duggars’ dark world

We’ve deliberately not touched on the controversy surrounding the formerly rather popular family of 19 Kids and Counting. There didn’t seem to be much to say: the family that many Americans enjoyed watching as a “good, wholesome family” fell from grace with the reveal of abuse inside the family and what was and was not done about it.

Perhaps it’s only because they’ve been revealed to be not so perfect that people are actually beginning to talk about what they represent outside of the conservative value and big happy family they oozed. Check out this article from Ms. Magazine on the intersection between the Duggars and the conservative movements they’re the public faces of the Independent Fundamentalist Baptists, the Advanced Training Institute and others all under the umbrella of the Christian Patriarchy movement and the bizarrely popular Christian purity movement.

social media campaign calls on women to thank men for not raping them

We see a lot of nonsensical things in this day and age, but this has got to be one of the most confounding. It really is a pointless endeavor that tries to imply that “good men’s” hurt feelings are more important than the very real issues and threats women deal with on a daily basis. Take a look at the full article here.

columbia president refuses to shake emma sulkowicz’s hand at graduation ceremony

Yeah… that was deliberate. Nobody believes you, Bollinger. Especially after watching the video. It was a cheap attempt at a snub that only serves to highlight the deplorable way Columbia and colleges across the nation handle cases of rape and sexual assault. Which is to say that they don’t know how to and are largely uninterested in learning to do so.
